What Is the Easiest Way to Get a Green Card?

There is no such thing as an easy way to get a green card. However, some methods are more straightforward than others.

Family-Based Green Card

The most common way to obtain a green card is through family members. Current wait times depend on the relationship:

• Spouse – approximately 23 to 32 months
• Siblings – approximately 10 years
• Unmarried children of U.S. citizens – approximately 7 to 8 years
• Unmarried adult children of green card holders – approximately 8 to 9 years
• Married adult children of U.S. citizens – approximately 13 to 22 years

Green Card Lottery (Diversity Visa)

If a family-based green card is not an option, the second most straightforward approach is through the U.S. Department of State’s Green Card Lottery (Diversity Visa Program).

• The lottery is a random computer selection.
• A limited number of visas are allocated to each region of the world.
• No single country can receive more than 7% of the diversity visas available in any given year.

Employment-Based Green Card

If the diversity lottery is not an option, the next best route is through employment-based categories. In particular, the EB-3 Unskilled Visa is a great option for obtaining a green card.

• Wait times for employment-based immigrant visas are relatively short in most categories.
• The employer is responsible for handling the entire process, which reduces stress for the applicant.
• The EB-3 Unskilled Visa does not require advanced degrees, prior work experience, or additional qualifications.

Through the EB-3 Unskilled Visa, an immigrant agrees to work an unskilled job currently unfilled by the U.S. market and receives a green card to help fill the labor shortage.
